Nathaniel Burola is an AI and environment researcher focused on understanding and mitigating the ecological footprint of artificial intelligence systems. He is the founder of the AI & Environment Resource Hub, an open-access database curating more than 1,000 resources that map the rapidly evolving intersection of AI, environmental science, sustainability, and climate policy. His work bridges ecological research, data science, and technology policy to advance environmental accountability in the design and deployment of AI.
Originally trained as a marine ecologist, Nathaniel now delivers research, trainings, and workshops examining the life-cycle impacts of AI and data centers—including energy use, water consumption, and carbon emissions—as well as the application of AI in climate and environmental domains such as renewable energy forecasting, biodiversity monitoring, and climate adaptation. He is an active speaker and writer, contributes to The Climate Code newsletter, and brings more than five years of experience across public policy, AI governance, and climate technology. As an Executive Fellow in Sustainability in Tech at The Digital Economist, Nathaniel contributes research and policy insight on responsible AI deployment and environmental resilience. He is currently completing a Master of Technology Policy at the RAND School of Public Policy, supporting initiatives that align technological innovation with ecological integrity and long-term climate goals.
